Soda is My Enemy

It dawned on me this morning that the problems I’m having with losing weight since the beginning of summer have coincided with me drinking a lot of soda.

You might be thinking “duh” cuz we all know regular soda is packed full of sugar.  But I can count on two hands the number of regular cans of soda (or “pop”) I’ve had this summer.

The number of diet sodas I’ve had though?  I’d need both my hands and feet, plus those of a roomful of people to count the number of those since I’ve downed since the beginning of summer because unless my neighbors are putting their empty diet soda cans in my recycling bin I’m averaging 6-7 a day.

From January to May of this year I kept my soda consumption to 1 or 2 a week and then I had regular because I decided I was going to stop drinking “cans of chemicals.”  During those 4 months I lost almost 30 pounds.

Then at the first summer party I went to where I was picky and wouldn’t drink the tap water because I didn’t like how it tasted (yes, should have brought my own but I didn’t) I broke down and had a diet soda because I wanted to save my Weight Watchers points for the meal we were having.

From that point on it was “game over.” I was back to drinking diet soda with a vengeance (love, love love diet orange  Sunkist and don’t understand why my husband grimaces when he’s dying of thirst and takes a sip out of my bottle).

Maybe those articles I’ve read (here’s one) that say drinking diet soda tends to make people gain weight (for a variety of reasons including people thinking they can eat more since they drank a diet soda -having a large order fries since you’re ordering a diet Coke to go with them which yes I have done many many times).

Today I’m going to quit drinking diet soda for 1 entire month to see if it helps me get my weight loss back on track.  If it does then I’ll know for sure that diet soda is the enemy I think it is.

Here’s to lots of water (wish I could say that with enthusiasm).  I’ll keep repeating “I love water” “I love water” (with the theory that if I say that often enough I’ll actually start to believe it).

Bottoms up with the H20!
