My Acupuncture Diary

My third acupuncture treatment was a couple days ago and I’m losing my skepticism about how “sticking a bunch of needles in me can help alleviate my headaches; and help me control cravings so that I stop overeating.”

Since I started acupuncture 3 weeks ago I’ve lost 8 pounds (yipee!), have less severe headaches (hallelujah!), and I feel calmer than I used (a strange feeling I’m not used to since I’m notorious for being wound as tight as a drum all the time and unable to relax – ever!).

Plus, I wasn’t my normal “bitch on wheels” the 2 days before my “monthly friend” made an appearance, which is probably the first time that’s ever happened!  (I’m really making it sounds like I’m hard person to live with….I hope I’m not.  People tell me I’m nice.  I hope they’re not lying.  They wouldn’t just be saying I’m nice so that I don’t jump down their throats, would they?).

I’m still hating the needles in my ears though.  They hurt enough to make my want to snarl at my acupuncturist (I don’t though – she knows it hurts cuz she’s had it done to her many times).

I really think acupuncture is helping which is super exciting to me!!

I’m getting relief from headaches without taking a bunch of pills that have nasty side effects; I’m not feeling the need to pig out and overeat and don’t need a weight loss pill that can also have nasty side effects to do it; and I’m getting stress relief without having to hum and chant for several hours a day!

All I have to put up with are a bunch of needles in my body (which thankfully I don’t have to look at so I can pretend they’re not there); but I’ll do that any day over going back to taking a bunch of pills again that in the end only made me sicker.

So I’ve decided I’m going to keep going with the acupuncture treatments for at least another 3 weeks and then re-evaluate it.

The only really hard thing about it?  The cost.  Insurance doesn’t cover it and I don’t know why.  Does anyone know of a grass roots initiative to have acupuncture covered by medical insurance or know of a petition I can sign asking for it to be covered?

What’s Your “Get Real Weight?”

Have you ever looked at one of the “ideal” weight charts in your doctor’s office and thought, “get real – there’s no way I’ll ever get down to that weight again unless I can find a time machine to take me back to my teenage years or grow six (or twelve) inches in the next month!”

I look at them and think “yeah -right.” My “ideal” weight on the chart below is between 127-141 pounds (The data originated from Met Life’s Ideal weight charts first established in 1943 and revised in 1983).

I haven’t weighed 127 pounds since I was a junior in high school where I regularly skipped breakfast and lunch (and only picked at my dinner) so that my size 5 hip hugger jeans would fit.  I was lightheaded and dizzy every afternoon.  No thanks to doing that ever again.

Today my realistic “get real” weight is 160 pounds.

How did I come up with that number?  Nope, didn’t just pull it out of my butt and decide it was a nice number.

After the birth of my second child, 160 pounds is the weight I maintained for a little over a year (until I got pregnant again).  I felt healthy and energetic at that weight, and even though I couldn’t get into single digit jeans, I still fit into normal clothes.  And, maybe most importantly, I didn’t look into the mirror at that time and hate what I saw.

So that’s why 160 pounds, which isn’t even close to what some stupid chart says I should weigh, is the weight I think I should weigh and is even the weight my doctor agreed would be okay for me because it’s sure a lot better than the high of 286 that I was at 3 years ago (and am NEVER EVER GOING BACK TO).

What’s your “get real” weight?

At what weight will you feel healthy and feel good about yourself?

Is There A Healthy Low Carb Diet?

Several years ago when the Atkins diet was super popular and food manufacturers were falling over themselves to flood the supermarket shelves with low carb foods, I jumped on the bandwagon and lost 35 pounds in 2 1/2 months.

I ate eggs fried in butter with a side of all the bacon I could eat (sometimes a whole pound!) for breakfast, shoveled bun-less burgers (lettuce instead of a bun please but don’t forget the cheese, mayo and bacon) into my mouth at lunch, cooked huge hunks of beef, pork or chicken for my dinner with a side of broccoli or salad, and in between snacked on lots of cheese. Bread, pasta, grains of any kind and fruit were shunned.

The weight practically fell off me. I was in hog heaven. Who knew a person could lose lots of weight while eating all the bacon they wanted and without every being hungry? My piggish happiness lasted until I couldn’t stand not having any bread or fruit. One bite of it and the weight stated to pile back on almost as fast as I lost it.

The sensible part of me knew that eating a diet consisting mainly of saturated fat wasn’t healthy and eventually my body made its unhappiness known because it got to the point where I was always tired and sluggish and could barely get through my normal day, much less a vigorous workout.

That was 2004. Since then I’ve tried the South Beach diet (another low carb diet), the Zone diet (yet another low carb diet), the Sugar Busters diet (giving sugar up completely makes me really crabby – just ask my husband) and for the last 2 years, Weight Watchers.

The only diet where I’ve had success, meaning I not only lost weight but have kept it off, is Weight Watchers; but I’ve been backsliding with Weight Watchers recently and have gained back 15 of the 57 pounds I’ve lost. I’m so sick of counting “points” for every bite of food I eat and have stubbornly refused to do it for the past several months hence the extra poundage that’s slowly finding its way back to me.

So it’s back to “square one” for me, looking for an eating plan that will help me lose weight but this time I want one that I don’t have to convert every food I eat into a “points” value. A lower carb diet still appeals to me because I know they work, but I’m not going to going on an unhealthy low carb diet again and to me Atkins is definitely not a healthy way to go.

A few days ago I decided to try a lower carb eating plan along with 17 other people at the Curves facility I work out at. The meals and recipes I’m using are from the Curves Complete diet plan, which while encouraging more protein (but healthy lean protein like chicken breasts and fish instead of fatty cuts of meat like my beloved bacon). It’s going good so far even though I’m not following it completely – I’m eating a lot more fruit than what the plan recommends. Fruit can be high in carbs, but they’re good carbs and they help me have enough energy to get through my workouts.

It’s making me think that there can be a lower carb diet that is healthy. The meals I’m having this week are filled with lean protein (including nuts – yum!), low fat dairy, whole grains, vegetables and fruits. There’s no soda, sugary desserts or junky snacks without any nutritional value. That may sound boring and hard but it’s not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be (okay, I have had a couple bites of chocolate but a girl’s gotta live right?).

Honestly, I don’t think I could eat like this every week, but I don’t have to. I can add in some dessert and even chips if I want to next week but small amounts or I won’t be able to meet my protein, fat, fiber, carb, and caloric intake targets.

Maybe I’ll even take the plunge towards super healthy eating and try the “Eco-Atkins” high protein, low carb diet. The the “Eco-Atkins” eating strategy (sounds much nicer than “diet” doesn’t it?) has been developed by David J.A. Jenkins (he’s the person who developed the glycemic index which you may or may not giving a “flying hoot” about).

It’s a high protein meal plan filled with protein rich plant-based foods instead of animal foods. It’s a completely animal free vegan meal plan. That blows my mind. I didn’t think it was possible to eat a high protein diet without eating any animal products (at least eggs and cheese).

According to information on the Web MD website, people who tried the “Eco-Atkins” eating plan got their protein “primarily from gluten, soy beverages; tofu; soy burgers; veggie products such as bacon, breakfast links, and deli slices; nuts; vegetables; and cereals. The diet emphasized viscous vegetables like okra and eggplant, along with other low-starch vegetables.”

Maybe low carb eating, but the healthy kind (words I never thought I’d put in the same sentence), will find a new resurgence of popularity and we’ll all to a healthy normal weight!

Interested in Losing Weight; or Committed to Losing Weight?

Do you want to lose weight?

I know I sure do but even though I’m constantly saying it, I’m not always doing something about it. (I seem to be something of a “bag of hot air at times.”)

But, wishing and hoping don’t make it happen (but I sure wish it did).

Doing something about it does.

Birthdays, weddings, unexpected meals out, chocolate cake, bad days, disappointments, stress and boredom happen to all of us. Some people can deal with life’s ups and downs without turning to food (and when I say “some people” I don’t mean me).

I’m the one that tends to deal with anything bad or upsetting or stressful or super exciting by eating; and I’m not pigging out on raw carrots.

When everything in my life is going well it’s not hard for me to eat healthy and exercise. But the second I hit a bump in the road and the littlest thing goes wrong there I am with my hand in the chip bag or my head in the freezer looking for ice cream.

So am I committed to losing weight? That’s pretty much a big fat “NO!” If I was committed to losing weight I wouldn’t use every little thing as an excuse to get off track.

The last 2 weeks I’ve been thinking hard about how my head and my emotions have control over my eating and how my stomach doesn’t because whether or not I’m hungry is often a non-factor in my decision to eat.

I’m most likely to eat something when I’m bored or depressed and let me tell you that living in frigid Wisconsin in the dead of winter can be very depressing. Dragging myself out of my warm bed in the morning is sometimes almost more than I can handle – forget about getting dressed up warmly and going outside to get some fresh air and exercise! (See how good I am at excuses?)

If I was truly committed to losing weight and not just giving it lip service I wouldn’t let anything get me off track; or at least not let it get me off track for long. I’d stick with my commitment to lose weight no matter what (meaning that slip up of a whole bag of chips – even though they’re baked – wouldn’t mean a backslide that lasts several months. Instead I would dust myself off, get over it, and get right back on track).

And that’s what I’ve decided to do. Starting today, no matter what, I’m not going to let the ups and downs of life get me off track with my efforts to lose weight. I’m sticking with it.

I’m going to be like the “Little Engine that Could” and repeat over and over again “I know I can, I know I can, I know I can!

Let’s do it together! I know we can!

To help us keep our focus here’s a poem that a friend gave me a couple weeks ago. I don’t know where she got it from, but it must have been written by a Weight Watchers member because it mentions points. I think the words in it are powerful.

COMMIT DON’T QUIT
When you’ve eaten too much and you can’t write it donw
And you feel like the biggest failure in town;
When you want to give up just because you gave in
And forget all about being healthy and thin;
So What! You went over your point a bit;
It’s your mext move that counts….do don’t you quit!

It’s a moment of truth. It’s an attitude change;
It’s learning the skills to get back in your range;
It’s telling yourself “you’ve done great up till now;
You can take on this challenge and beat it somehow.”
It’s part of your journey towards reaching your goal;
You’re still gonna make it, just stay in control.

To stumble and fall is not a disgrace
If you summon the will to get back in the race;
But, often the struggler’s when losing their grip
Just throw in the towel and continue to slip
And learn too late when the damage is done
That the race wasn’t over and they still could of won.

Life-style change can be awkward and slow
But facing each challenge will help you to grow;
Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint in the cloud of doubt.
When you’re pushing to the brink, just refuse to submit
If you bit you write…but don’t you quit!

Is Weight Watchers Forgetting About Helping People Lose Weight?

I used to be a devoted member of Weight Watchers, until yesterday when I canceled my monthly pass. Right now I am so mad at a couple people working for the company- specifically the people who decided that my leader was no longer good enough for Weight Watchers.

She was “let go” from Weight Watchers a few weeks ago, after having worked there for more than 10 years. She was a leader who was loved and she was great at it. People would drive from several towns away to attend her meetings even though there were meetings that were closer. She was that good of a leader – caring, compassionate, and always able to help me get my head back in the right place when I got off track with my weight loss efforts. Plus she had great results with people that proved how good she was. She had helped several people achieve weight loss goals of over 100 pounds!

I was devastated to find she was gone and from how things had been at the meetings the previous couple of weeks I certainly didn’t think she had left willingly because why would there need to be 4 people from the corporation watching over things? Looking back it obviously was to prevent our leader from saying she was being let go.

Why would they let someone who has won numerous awards with the company walk out the door? Someone with rocks for brains as far as I’m concerned.

Apparently she wasn’t doing enough “selling” of Weight Watchers products at the meetings. One of her bosses was insistent that she do 5 “sells” of Weight Watchers products during every meeting. Yeah, I was paying $12 a week for a meeting just to have 5 Weight Watchers products hawked at me during a 30 minute meeting. (don’t quote me on this but I do have it from a source that I consider very reliable; and I have attended a couple meetings to see how the new leaders they brought in are doing and I’ve counted how many times during a meeting they try to sell something – it’s at least 5 every time!).

How insane is that?

Aren’t the meetings supposed to be about support and helping people with their questions, problems and most importantly, successes with weight loss? The most inspiring meetings were ones where someone reached a milestone weight loss goal or “Eureka” when they reached goal!

Isn’t it supposed to be about the people and not be focused on selling as much “product” as possible; which by the way are not the healthiest things in the world. Some of the ingredients lists on Weight Watchers bars, snacks and other products read like a science experiment – not exactly health food.

Seems to me that Weight Watchers has forgotten about the people they are supposed to be helping and instead have put the focus on “selling.” Yes, I know they are a company and need to make money. I have no problem with that. But there’s no way I’m going to continue to pay to attend meetings only to have them turn into a 30 minute commercial for Weight Watchers products.

It’s time for me to move on and find a place where I feel supported and not just like a sales target.

But first I’ll be writing a letter to the president of Weight Watchers stating how I feel.

Acupuncture for Weight Loss – Round 2

I just had my second acupuncture treatment to help me with food cravings and hopefully alleviate my headaches.

The needles in my ears still hurt like a bitch when they went in, but if I lose half as much weight this week as I did last week I’ll be more than ready for round 3 next week.

I lost 7 pounds in the last week! I’m not sure if it’s because I wanted the treatment to work and thought it would, so therefore I ate less (kind of like a placebo effect); or if it really did curb my cravings. Maybe it was a little of both.

Plus my headaches this past week, while still the same in duration, were a little less severe. My head feels less tight and like there’s less pressure behind my eyes.

Those two things made me ready and eager to subject myself becoming a human pin cushion again this week.

She gave me two new needles this week – in my neck of all places (think of the bolts sticking out the side of Frankenstein’s neck and then replace that image with acupuncture needles and also hopefully with a more favorable image of how I look)

If you think I wasn’t squeamish about the needles in my neck, you’re crazy. I think my eyes nearly popped out of my head when the acupuncturist recommended them because she immediately assured me that they weren’t painful because there a lot of tissue in the neck and the needles don’t go in that deep.

I only felt one of them go in and it wasn’t nearly as bad as though darn ear needles (5 in each ear). Total needle count this week – 20 (10 in the ears, 2 in the neck, 2 in the hands, 4 in my legs, and 2 in my feet).

Even though I tried harder to relax this week I still did a pretty good impression of a statue because I was still worried about moving the wrong way and disturbing the needles. Maybe I’ll do better at the relaxing thing next week.

They went in the side of my neck. I didn’t look in a mirror (would never want to see myself with the needles poking out because it very well might make me so light headed that I would faint and poke the needles all the way in which is

Acupuncture For Weight Loss?

Have you heard about acupuncture for weight loss? One of my sister-in-laws told me about it a couple weeks ago when I asked her if she had lost weight or was just wearing a sweater that was way too big for her. She’s lost 16 pounds so far and going to an acupuncturist to help with cravings is what’s helped her do it. I’m so happy for her!

That finally got me to make an appointment to see an acupuncturist myself even though my doctor has been trying to get me to go for a couple years now in an effort to relieve my headaches.

What had been stopping me? My official excuse what the cost, but the truth? Well even though I’m not technically afraid of needles because I had weekly allergy shots for several years as a kid and several more as an adult, it’s one thing to get a shot in each arm every week and quite another to have so many needles stuck in me at once that I could qualify as a human pin cushion! And on top of it, those needles stay in a while and don’t get pulled back out right away!

But the thought of alleviating my “hungry all the time” feeling was a bigger lure than multiple needles sticking out of me even though my sister-in-law warned me that several of those needles would be stuck in my ears and that they could very well “prickle” a little.

So I made an appointment and surprise of surprises, my husband said he would try it too to see if it could help him lose his pudge (and also hopefully help him with his snoring and his high blood pressure).

“Prickle” isn’t the word I would use for how those needles in my ears felt though, A couple of them hurt pretty bad when they went in. Luckily the pain subsided right away, although honestly it didn’t go away completely.

The acupuncturist also put needles in my hands, legs and my feet and those I barely felt at all. They were like a little “ting” and that was it.

Then it was 20 minutes of supposedly relaxing but I was more worried about making sure I lay completely still so I didn’t disturb those needles and prayed that I wouldn’t get an itchy nose because even though I knew there were needles in my hands I didn’t want to see them! And I certainly didn’t want to accidentally push one in further than it was supposed to go! So I did my best impression of a statute for those 20 minutes (and did quite well, thank you).

I’m not sure what it’s going to do for me yet although after even one session I feel different (the acupuncturist was up-front about needing to commit to several sessions before deciding whether or not it was helping). I feel less pressure in my head though, especially behind my eyes, so I have hope.

Although it’s not cheap, it’s also not nearly as expensive as I thought it would be (it’s costing me $60 for each weekly session). If it helps me get rid of my headaches and helps me lose weight, it will be money well spent. If not, then I guess I’ll chalk it up to a learning experience (I’ve certainly spent that much money on stupider stuff).

So now my question is whether or not you’ve tried acupuncture for weight loss or if you know anyone who has. I would love to hear what you’ve heard or what your experience has been. Please share in the comments section.

P.S. I’ll update every week to let you know how it’s going. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Buy Some Cute Socks as a Non Food Reward for Losing Weight

What’s the first thing most of us do to celebrate? It’s to stuff our faces with food, right?

But when we’re losing weight, going out and celebrating with a big meal is counterproductive.

Although I do my best to no longer say to myself “good job on losing weight – I’m going to go out for a huge banana split;” I still like to reward myself in some way for reaching a weight loss goal without spending a ton of money.

Why not socks? I found the cutest ones at LittleMismatched.com!

They’re sets of 3 socks that have complimentary colors and patterns but are each different. How fun is it to wear socks that don’t match but still kinda do match? It’s like being Punky Brewster! mismatched socks

My current favorites are the black/white anklets , the rings/dots anklets, and the peace/love knee high socks. mismatched socks mismatched socks

If you want to be even more wild and crazy (and completely original) you can build your own package of socks (and yes if you want to be boring you can buy 3 of the same sock and have a spare in case the washer eats one).

On the other hand, if you want to be a little more discreet you can buy sock liners that only you will know you’re wearing.

A set of 3 of these cute socks is currently only $8.

Plus check their online outlet for socks as little as $4.

Check them out! (and no, this glowing review is not something I am being compensated for – I just truly think their stuff is awesome!).

They have lots other cute and fun stuff besides socks too. I also adore their mismatched flip flops.

Starbucks Etiquette – What’s Your Opinion?

So I’m currently at Starbucks enjoying a nonfat Pumpkin Spice latte (they have syrup leftover from the holiday season and are using it up so I’m taking advantage and having one while I still can).

A guy came in about 5 minutes ago and sat a couple tables away from me. Apparently he thinks it’s okay to have the speaker volume on his computer turned up loud enough for himself and the rest of us around him (which happens to only be me right now) to hear the sports scores updates he’s listening to.

Shouldn’t he be polite and either use earphones or read the scores instead of listening to them? Yes, I am assuming he can read.

My passive aggressive glares in his direction have not helped (he’s too engrossed in his sports stuff to notice) so is it okay for me to politely ask him to turn the speakers down? (at least I’ll try to be polite.)

Or should I just tell him that his black and tan patterned socks DO NOT look good with his navy blue pants?

Starbucks Has 1 Point Cookies!

Starbucks has a new line of packaged snacks. I noticed them right away when I walked into Starbucks this morning (my nose always gravitates right towards the food). Among them are packages of cookies from Dr. Lucy’s; sugar, chocolate chip, and cinnamon thins.

I chose the cinnamon thins to try after dutifully checking the points value of them before shoving them in my mouth.

The cookies are 1 Weight Watcher point each! How awesome is that? (but check points values for yourself to be sure).

The taste? They rock! The cinnamon thins are super yummy. They taste like snickerdoodle cookies – crunchy, sweet, and cinnamony (is that a word?) starbucks cinnamon thin cookie

Plus they don’t have any milk, eggs, peanuts or tree nuts and are certified gluten free so they are safe to eat for people with peanut allergies; people who need to avoid gluten; and are vegan friendly.

Besides being tasty (my number 1 criteria for food), I like that they don’t have trans fat, msg or preservatives and that they are a great “points friendly” treat.

My only problem is going to be finding the willpower to just eat 1 or 2 of the cookies at a time and not pig out and eat the whole bag of 4. But even if I do eat the whole bag today, it’s still only 4 points which is a lot better than the points it would cost me if I ate one of the red velvet cupcakes or cinnamon scones sitting prettily inside the Starbucks bakery case.

The only thing I don’t like about the cookies is the “nutrition facts” because the package has 1.3 servings. Seriously? I think that’s stupid. A lot of people are going to look at the package and assume that the nutrition info is for the whole package since it only contains 4 cookies. Most people are not going to eat 1 serving and then save the other .3 of the remaining serving for later on. That’s kind of misleading.

But, overall I think the cookies are great.

UPDATE ON 1/20/10 – tried the DrLucy sugar cookies at Starbucks today (also 1 Weight Watcher point each). They’re good; crunchy with a sweet taste and are very similar to the cinnamon thins I tried the other day – the only difference to me is that the sugar cookies don’t have the cinnamon taste to them. If you don’t like cinnamon these would be good cookies to try but since I’m a cinnamon lover I’ll stick with the cinnamon thins. Next up is giving the DrLucy’s chocolate chip cookies a try. That’s the third variety Starbucks is offering.
