Clothes shopping while I am in the midst of losing weight has been a complete exercise in frustration. I don’t know if I should buy the size that just fits (as in it would look better if I lost another five pounds) or should I buy the next size up that fits nicely (but will start to look a little big and frumpy if – actually make that when – I lose another five pounds).
I have a Christmas party tonight and the one sweater wrap for the one dressy outfit I have had a mishap in the wash. I’d like to blame my husband but I was the one that forgot to change the water temperature from hot to cold before turning it on so now I have a cute looking sweater wrap that is about the size of Barbie doll clothing (okay not really but I doubt it will fit even after I get to my goal weight which is 70 pounds away). I think it’s time to see if my daugther is in the market for a sweater. She’s tiny (yes, I’m a tiny bit jealous because she eats whatever she wants – aka full octane Pepsi and Fritos – and still wears jeans that I could barely fit one leg into).
Anyway I went shopping this morning for a replacement sweater. The 1X in the women’s department just barely fit and I feel slightly self conscious in it. They were out of the 2X size. The 3X size was really big on me (which was pretty darn exciting since the 3X used to be too small for me at this particular store). But I would have time to go to another store where they do have the 2X size (the nice lady in the women’s department checked for me).
So what do I do? Do I stay optimistic that I’ll keep losing even though it’s the dreaded holiday season and that the sweater will fit nicely and give me a little wiggle room in it by Chrismtas?
Or do I go get the 2X size and potentially have to fork out more money for clothes for Christmas Day because it might be too big by then?
I swear that I need to just go to a store that sells only black stretchy clothes that will fit me through several sizes.
Clothes shopping right now is so frustrating because although I love being able to buy new and smaller clothes I’m not interested in having to take out a second mortgage to fund a new wardrobe every couple of months.
I already forked over nearly $200 last night for some warm casual clothes (this was before the cute sweater met the hot water in the washer) because I have been literally cold all the time. I got rid of my winter clothes this summer after I shed 50 pounds. It was a mild November here in Wisconsin so I was able to get through it wearing my summer weight sweatshirts and by layering my summer shirts underneath them. But now winter is finally making itself known and I was sick of being cold all the time.
I admit it was tons of fun buying the stuff, although not as much fun as it will be when I can leave the “plus size” department and shop in the regular size section where there are tons more choices and not so much of the ugly fat size clothes (I have no idea who the crazy people are who think that fat girls like me look good in loud print clothes and horizontal stripes because we don’t!).
And I’m still not done with having to fork out money. A winter coat that’s not 2 sizes too big would be nice and I need shoes that aren’t sandals. It’s crazy but the shoes I wore last winter are now too big. I didn’t know that feet could get smaller when a person lost weight. I luckily have a pair of boots that will look okay with my outfit tonight but the heels on them are definitely not for my everyday use (these heels were a purchase the store clerk talked me into and don’t belong on my feet for more than 2 hours at a time and the only reason I let myself get talked into them because they made me look taller – and thinner!).
Anyway, does anyone have any ideas on how to put together a transitional wardrobe that doesn’t break the bank while losing weight? I could some ideas before I completely drain my clothing budget account (and put it in the hole).
